The Sales Funnel: What is it?

No, a marketing funnel isn't an actual funnel. The reason for using the term "funnel" for this marketing concept is simply to aid in visualizing and explaining a sales process from the beginning to the conclusion. Since it has a broad entry way for potential customers "Unqualified Prospects" at the top and a much narrower opening to convert sales in the middle,, the term funnel is an accurate comparison.

The top of the funnel or entry point to the funnel will be people we might consider to be "unqualified prospects" These are people who could need your products or services however, you've not yet contacted them. After a few sales and promotions you'll have customers who have bought your product or service.

The effectiveness of a lead generation funnel is due to its ability to track the actions of your prospects at various stages of the sales process. With the sales funnel, by finding out the number of qualified prospects at each point of the process, it's possible to predict the amount of potential customers that will eventually become actual customers.

A sales funnel will help you see where your sales process is failing or successful, or whether your campaign isn't attracting enough customers. This information helps you choose the best place to focus your efforts to ensure that sales are on the right level and that you are meeting your the marketing objectives. It helps track and control customers' sales processes.

The Sales Funnel Top Front or End

The top part of your sales funnel will require the most constant testing and will be the most engaged. You'll discover virtually limitless front-end strategies that are limited only by your creativity and resources.

The primary goal is to get new clients and then convert them into buyers.

When a prospect opts in or subscribes to the product or service you provide and is "qualified". This is the point in the sales funnel where the potential client or "Unqualified prospect" becomes a qualified leads because they have taken actions that show that they are interested enough to buy your product.

You must drive targeted traffic on your blog, website or squeeze page in order for your front-end system to function. PPC adverts, articles marketing, PPC advertisements, social media like Google+, Twitter and Facebook, YouTube, banners and blogs forums, content posting on forums and marketing are all great resources.

There are a variety of ways to "qualify" an "unqualified potential customer. One of the most effective ways to qualify prospects is to create an online squeeze page. It allows you to provide something valuable to your product that users can receive for free or at a substantially reduced price, in exchange for their email address and name. You can select from reports and newsletters and videos and e-mail courses.

We can see that the front end is where customers are drawn to your sales funnel. But what about the back end?

The Bottom of The Funnel: The Back-End

The bottom or back end of the sales funnel is where the major sales and profits are made. This is typically the place where you sell the most costly products. They all belong to the same subject, but in a different format such as video, audio or live interaction.

The major difference between the front and back-ends lies in the type of client as well as the cost of the product/service being provided.

It's the case that only a small percent, maybe 1-2% of the people who enter your front-end, will end up in your back-end. Because a few people will spend more money, it's okay.

You see, that although front-end products and services can cost under $100, back-end products and services are typically priced in the 100s or 1000's. This means that the top of the funnel, or the back-end, the primary source of revenue for your Internet company. It's also the most predictable and stable area in the sales process.

As I mentioned, the sales funnel may be as easy or complex as your imagination or resources allow.
